Hessy Levinsons Taft was born in the Hitler era in Berlin to Latvian Jewish parents who were studying opera at the Berlin Conservatory of Music. A year later she won a beauty contest for the most beautiful Aryan baby in Germany. Neither she nor her family knew she had been entered into this contest. That story and its resulting publicity led her family to leave Germany. Thanks to the ingenuity of her father and incredibly fateful circumstances, her family was able to flee the holocaust to various locations in France and subsequently to Cuba. Hessy will share with us the story of her baby picture – ironic evidence of the flaws of the theory of the Aryan race – and her family’s escape from Europe.
