LGBTQIA+ Working Group
The LGBTQIA+ Working Group learns about the issues affecting the LGBTQIA+ community, looking at this social justice issue through humanist and Jewish lenses, and bring awareness and opportunities for tikkun olam to the congregation. Please join us! Members and non-members are welcome. To be added to our listserv, please email Lidia at l.pruente@kahalbraira.org.
Mission Statement
The KB LGBTQIA+ Working Group, also known as the Queer Working Group, is committed to fostering awareness, education, understanding, and positive change around LGBTQIA+ issues in our congregation and beyond. As for all marginalized communities, conventional cultural scripts and expectations often exclude or “other” LGBTQIA+ people and their families. Understanding the intersections of multiple identities and in order to live up to the Humanistic Jewish ideal of respecting the freedom, dignity, and self-esteem of every human being, KB has a duty to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ people, their friends, families, and allies. To this end, we hope to provide support for community members exploring queerness within a Jewish Humanist framework. We aim to lead ongoing education and change within the congregation, school, and larger communities around inclusive language, honoring our whole identities, and cultivating an attitude of joyful education and continual learning and growth for all members.
